Transform.Ed Briefing #62
Inside the Briefing: From redefining the classroom experience to adhering to ethical guardrails - embracing a human-centric approach to Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence, though a relatively new subject area for K-12 schools worldwide, is spearheading the digital transformation of education today. In such a scenario, it is critical that educators and learners are equipped with the necessary competencies to effectively use AI in educational settings and beyond.
Aligned with the Beijing consensus on AI and education, which emphasizes human interaction, lifelong learning for all, and human-machine collaboration, some of these competencies encompass understanding AI fundamentals, data literacy, AI pedagogy, and digital citizenship.
Last week, we asked our readers about the major obstacle preventing human-ai collaboration in their classrooms. About 75 percent of our respondents believed ethical and privacy concerns were the primary hurdle, while the rest of them cited a lack of familiarity with AI.
Upholding human rights and dignity, ethical guidelines rooted in fundamental principles such as transparency and fairness, coupled with the constant human oversight of AI systems, can guide our practice in classrooms.
As an educator, what steps are we taking to make ourselves more familiar with the AI tools and resources for their potential integration in the classrooms while adhering to ethical guardrails? Do you believe there is sufficient training available for educators to effectively leverage AI in the classrooms?
