Policy Framework >> AI Competency Framework For Teachers
By Fengchun Miao, Mutlu Cukurova | UNESCO
With the advent of AI, the traditional teacher-student relationship has evolved into teacher-AI-student dynamic. This shift requires a thorough evaluation of teachers' roles and the skills they need to navigate this unprecedented time and age. Yet, by 2022, only seven countries had any AI training programmes or frameworks for teachers.
To address this gap, the UNESCO came up with the AI Competency Framework for Teachers, outlining essential knowledge, skills and values teachers must develop in the age of AI.
The framework identifies 15 competencies across five dimensions:
Human-centred mindset,
Ethics of AI,
AI foundations and applications,
AI pedagogy, and
AI for professional learning.
These competencies are to be acquired through three progression levels - Acquire, Deepen, and Create. This framework serves as a guiding light for shaping the national AI policies and teacher training programmes all across the world.
