School closures in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic have led to an abrupt shift in online teaching and learning around the world. This has affected educators and learners alike. Given the challenges faced by both the educators and learners in the new normal, never has Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) been so important as today.

The future of education lies in harnessing the social and emotional dimensions of learning to equip our global community to navigate our societies towards the common good.
“The power of education extends beyond the development of skills we need for economic success. It can contribute to nation-building and reconciliation. Our previous system emphasized the physical and other differences of South Africans with devastating effects. We are steadily but surely introducing education that enables our children to exploit their similarities and common goals while appreciating the strength in their diversity.”

An Associate Professor in the School of Education at American University, with a background and interest in visual and performing arts approaches to support student development of language skills and literacy. She is the sole editor of Arts Integration and Special Education. Dr. Anderson has developed arts-based learning approaches with children having a range of developmental needs and has presented extensively on the use of arts-based approaches with individuals having diverse abilities.
