“The current crisis should serve as a wakeup call regarding the urgency for increased financing and support of scientific research and collaboration. This concerns not only the natural sciences, but also the social and human and sciences.”
— Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is one of the three core domains of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) and is critical to helping young people to become active and engaged global citizens. What makes SEL and GCED transformative is also how they place the individual and the society in harmony with each other. They concentrate on what Paulo Freire termed as Conscientization — focussing on developing an in-depth understanding of the world and engaging in global issues with critical consciousness.
In Issue 11 of the Transforming Education Newsletter, we present to you Dr. Erik Jon Byker’s article from the .ed Magazine — a quarterly curated issue-based digital magazine for educators. The feature article this week focuses on finding a common ground between global education and socio-emotional learning to develop global citizens with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes to transform themselves and their societies.
Read the featured article of the week to know how the contours of SEL align with the development of globally competent citizens. Dr. Byker asserts that “there is great potential for framing SEL as an act of critical consciousness that guides global citizens to read and rewrite the world through taking mindful action in a collective way.”

The value of…[Read Full Story Here]
