The poll showed a clear preference for Conducting student service projects, which took the lead with 33% of the vote. All four other approaches, Integrating relevant case studies, Promoting empathy via storytelling, Fostering cultural understanding, and Embedding human rights principles, tied for second place, each receiving 17%. This distribution signals a collective belief that while hands-on, direct action (service projects) is the single most impactful everyday practice, educators also place equal, high value on the diverse foundational strategies that build humanitarian mindset: the cognitive (case studies/human rights) and the affective (empathy/culture). The results endorse a holistic approach, where service is powerfully informed by underlying values.

What Works to Promote Children’s Educational Access, Quality of Learning, and Wellbeing in Crisis-Affected Contexts

By Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE)

This rigorous review analyzed evidence of effective educational practices in societies affected by conflict and natural disaster. The core policy challenge identified is that, despite humanitarian education being chronically underfunded (only 1% of global humanitarian aid in 2012), there is a critical absence of rigorous, experimental research to definitively prove which interventions work best.

The policy highlights practical interventions backed by strong evidence:

Access: Community-Based Education (CBE) is strongly supported as the most effective strategy for increasing educational access, particularly for girls at the primary level in conflict settings.

Wellbeing: Providing school routines and rituals supports resilience and mental health for the majority of children, and creative arts and play therapies show strong evidence for improving wellbeing in post-crisis contexts.

Future Investment: The primary recommendation for policymakers is to invest in rigorous research on populations severely under-studied, including refugee children, youth, girls, and children with disabilities, to better inform future program design.

Facilitating dialogue circles and introducing holistic micro-projects each received 50% of the votes, reflecting a shared belief in both participatory discussion and hands-on, integrated learning as pathways to daily social-justice practice. Meanwhile, co-designing schedules with students, using identity-affirming texts, and using participatory assessments did not receive any votes, suggesting respondents currently see greater immediate impact in dialogue and project-based approaches over structural or text-based strategies.

Policy Research Working Paper >> From Chalkboards to Chatbots: Evaluating the Impact of Generative AI on Learning Outcomes in Nigeria

By Martín De Simone, Federico Tiberti, Maria Barron Rodriguez, Federico Manolio, Wuraola Mosuro, Eliot Jolomi Dikoru | World Bank Group

This study looked at how using AI-powered virtual tutors could help high school students in Nigeria learn English better. The program used Microsoft Copilot (which runs on GPT-4) to tutor first-year senior secondary students in English for six weeks.

The results showed a promising improvement of 0.23 standard deviations in their English test scores for students who used the virtual tutor. Girls showed the biggest improvements, while students who were already doing well at the start also gained more. It highlighted that the AI-powered tutoring can make a big difference, especially in places with limited resources, if it’s carefully planned and used in the right way.

A Framework for Reflective Practice >> Teaching Controversial Issues

This reflective practice framework is rooted in the grounded theory of contained risk-taking from Judy’s book, Hard Questions. It outlines eight interrelated elements that help educators teach controversial issues in a thoughtful, inclusive, and effective way. These elements include:

• Cultivating a supportive environment

  Teachers build trust through culturally responsive practices, community building, and shared norms like respectful listening and open-mindedness.

• Selecting authentic issues

  Educators choose relevant, meaningful, and appropriately controversial issues, beginning with less contentious topics and moving toward more charged ones.

• Preparing thoroughly

  Teachers deepen content knowledge, plan carefully for student needs and community contexts, and anticipate misconceptions or resistance.

• Choosing resources and pedagogies

  Rich materials and inclusive teaching methods (like Structured Academic Controversy) are selected to engage diverse student voices and perspectives.

• Thinking through the teacher’s stance

  Teachers reflect on their role in discussions, decide whether to disclose personal views, and adopt stances that promote student learning and inclusion.

• Guiding discussions

  Discussions are student-centered, using questioning strategies and protocols that foster equity, critical thinking, and authentic dialogue.

• Communicating proactively

  Clear communication with students, parents, and administrators about the purpose and content of controversial issues builds trust and preempts backlash.

• Addressing emotions

  Teachers create space for emotional reflection, balance feelings with reasoning, and foster metacognitive understanding of emotional responses.
